I wanted to take a moment to get everyone up to speed on what’s been happening with regards to the various SE Facebook communities and the new non-profit organization called Street Epistemology International (SEI).
Several years ago this Facebook group was created by a fan of Street Epistemology and I excitedly joined right in—enagaging with others here helped me improved at the method perhaps more than any other thing besides real one-on-one encounters.
Over time, I was made an Administrator, kept participating heavily here, and our group continued to grow. Many people began to think this was *my* group, but it always was managed by SE devotees.
As you may have noticed, SE is really starting to take off in some exciting new directions, and it became evident that, in order to take this from “fun little hobby on the side” to “worldwide movement,” some organizational structure was in order.
A few months ago we officially formed SEI, but only publicly announced it a week or so ago. I can’t begin to express how excited I am at this new venture. As a nonprofit organization, we have a Board of Directors, tax-exempt status, banking account, etc.. As the founder and Executive Director (ED), I think I have the strategic vision to develop this organization into something special. I’ve also cultivated solid relationships with many allies in related fields over the years that I think will be crucial for helping make SEI into a respectable organization and an overall force for good.
Watching the growing pains the ACA experinced was a real eye-opener, and it became clear that the SEI needed to take some steps to distance the new organization from the communities where people gather to discuss, learn, practice, and develop SE. Managing these robust communities is not scalable for a small organization, so the SEI passed a bylaw that prohibits Board Members and ED’s from being Moderators or Administrators of SE-related community gatherings. This function really needs to stay with the communities themselves.
SEI Board Members and ED’s can still be members of these communities, and there’s little chance I’d ever stop participating here or elsewhere, since these groups really are such a great way to hone one’s SE skills or simply keep abreast of the ever-developing improvements and diversity we are seeeing. So while I am no longer an administrator here, I am still a member and plan to stay engaged here for as long as possible.
There are some entities that made sense to roll up underneath the new SE non-profit organization, so here’s a list to make things more clear:
Non-SEI Affiliated (managed by fans of SE):
——
Facebook SE Study Group
Facebook SE Learn Group
Facebook Chat With a Street Epistemologist Group
Facebook Critique SE Group
SE Discord Server
SE Reddit
SEI-Affiliated (managed by the non-profit):
——
SE Facebook Page
SEI Facebook Page
SE Website ( includes SE Blog, List of 10k, etc.)
SEI Website
SE Podcast
SE Twitter
SEI Twitter
SE YouTube Channel
A good rule of thumb for figuring out which entity falls under which category is: If the entity is a place where people gather to discuss SE, then it’s probably not affiliated with the non-profit organization. If the entity is outward-facing and broadcasts announcments and information related to SE, then it’s probably under the the SEI.
For anyone wondering, all SE website domains, logos, etc. that I used to own personally have been “sold” (super modest price to make the transaction legal) to the non-profit, so nothing substantial falls under one individual anymore. The SEI Board of Directors now owns and manages these things.
I should note that, while we have Dr. Peter Boghossian’s endorsement (he’s ecstatic about how things have been developing with SE) he has no interest in managing any part of the new organization and appears to be content with seeing where others can take things with this method.
As the Executive Director of Street Epistemology International, I am excited to broaden SE’s exposure far beyond the atheist community, establish campaigns to solicit funding, cultivate wealthy donors, provide fiscal transparency, officially register logos, and provide resources to people interested in promoting SE across the world, regardless of which country you happen to be located in.
Over time, I’d like to work with the SE community in establishing some standards as to what Street Epistemology is and is not, develop an SE certification program, and offer an SEI membership program. SE has largely grown based on a grass-roots/community mentality, and I’d like to try and keep that influence intact as we enter this new phase.
And just in case anyone is wondering, while this personally may limit my ability to keep engaging in on-the-street conversations and uploading examples to my channel, I do hope to continue doing that as much as possible as time allows. I have several more videos in the queue waiting for upload, have at least two more blog posts to complete, would like to refresh my SE tutorial series in 2020, and have several other collaborations in the works.
I should also add that *very* influential people have begun to take notice of Street Epistemology, and the future looks very bright for moving SE into the mainstream, finding ways to test this method in a controlled setting, and establishing it as a viable option to promote critical thinking.
We are also looking to expand and diversify our Board (we need a good Treasurer) and find leaders willing and able to help us manage projects, so please reach to me or any of the Board Members if that is of interest to you.
Finally, please keep an eye out soon for an official SEI fund-raising effort in the next couple of weeks, or if you don’t want to wait, you can head to the SEI Website at www.streetepistemologyinternational.org and make a contribution now.
Thanks for reading all of this. Feel free to comment here or contact me directly if you wish to share your thoughts.
